What to Look For This Year

Three is a magical mix of “I can do it myself” and “Can you help me?” Your child is learning to use their words, test boundaries, and build real friendships. It’s the age of imagination, big emotions, and nonstop questions—so many questions. But behind it all is a little person who is growing more capable every day.

Communication & Language

☐  Speaks in 3–4 word sentences

☐  Asks lots of questions (Why? How? Where?)

☐  Talks clearly enough for strangers to understand most of               the time

☐  Knows and says their name and age

☐ Can tell a simple story or talk about a recent experience

Movement & Motor Skills

☐  Pedals a tricycle

☐  Walks up stairs using one foot per step

☐  Catches a large ball with arms

☐  Strings large beads or stacks 6+ blocks

☐  Uses child-safe scissors with growing control

Play & Learning

☐  Engages in pretend play with roles and stories

☐  Draws simple shapes like circles or crosses

☐ Begins to count objects out loud

☐ Names basic colors and some shapes

☐ Understands same vs. different

Social & Emotional

☐  Shows empathy when others are sad or hurt

☐  Takes turns (with reminders)

☐  Enjoys playing with other children

☐ May still struggle with sharing or emotional regulation

☐  Begins to express emotions with words

NEXT STEPS

Three can be a rollercoaster of giggles, tears, hugs, and opinions. If your child isn’t showing several of these skills or you notice something concerning, check in with your pediatrician. Every child grows on their own timeline, but your gut is worth trusting.
