What to Look For This Year
Four is the age where “little kid” starts looking a whole lot like “big kid.” They’re asking thoughtful questions, showing off their independence, and proudly announcing their favorite colors, animals, and superheroes. This is a year of growing confidence and curiosity— watch them bloom!
Communication & Language
☐ Speaks in full sentences
☐ Tells stories with a beginning, middle, and end
☐ Knows basic grammar (like “he,” “she,” and “they”)
☐ Understands most of what’s said at home and school
☐ Can describe events, ask and answer questions, and use imagination through language
Movement & Motor Skills
☐ Hops on one foot
☐ Throws and catches a ball with some coordination
☐ Uses a fork and spoon with little to no help
☐ Buttons large buttons and zips zippers
☐ Draws basic people with heads, bodies, and maybe arms or legs


Play & Learning
☐ Counts to 20 or higher
☐ Knows most letters and some sounds
☐ Recognizes own name in writing
☐ Understands the concept of time (yesterday, today, tomorrow)
☐ Engages in imaginative play with friends or independently
Social & Emotional
☐ Shows independence in dressing and hygiene
☐ Takes turns and shares more easily
☐ Follows classroom rules and routines
☐ Identifies and talks about feelings
☐ Develops strong attachments to friends and trusted adults
NEXT STEPS
Your four-year-old is growing fast—physically, socially, and emotionally. If something doesn’t feel quite right or your child seems behind in several areas, don’t hesitate to talk with your pediatrician. You’re their best observer and biggest cheerleader.
